Okay, what’s the deal? A lot of people don’t know what Pumpkin Scissors is. Well, I don’t have much room to judge. I only heard rumors about it, heard people saying it was really good. I bought this little gem at Best Buy with my birthday money (It was a choice between two Nightwish albums and an anime DVD or Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. It was a VERY hard decision.) and found it to be very worth the time.
The storyline deals with a concept that seems tired-a war has just ended, people are slowly building back what they have lost-when (all of a sudden!) more problems break out (starvation, soldiers becoming bandits, and pestilence). Yes, this may be cliche, but this anime does some things that set it apart from the average. Princess Alice L. Melvin is the leader (and 2nd lieutenant) of Section III- named Pumpkin Scissors. Alice names Section III because “according to her, in their war relief efforts they must face the threat of corrupt people who protect themselves behind lies, power, money and many other layers around them like a pumpkin, and the Section III must act like a pair of scissors cutting through those layers and delivering justice to them.” [Taken from wikipedia]
Alice is a rather spunky girl, always ready to take the opponent on. She uses a short sword, though in this volume, only attacks with it once. She meets a very tall man named Randel Oland, who was in a section of the military known as the Anti Tank Troopers. What they did is unknown, but what he can do is known-and feared. When he flips his lantern (marked “901 ATT”), he changes from jolly giant to fearsome fighter. He has a 13mm pistol called the “Door Knocker”, which takes down tanks. Obviously, this is not a guy to mess with. He ends up joining Alice anyway, and-voila. Seven members of Section III. (For more info on the series, click here.)
Reflections-
I really liked it. For an anime that isn’t getting a whole lot of publication in America, I think it’s safe to say that I will finish buying this series. This is very well worth the time. Although, I’ve got to say that it may not be the best for minors. It’s got some blood, though not much, and some freaky scenes. (One man going zombie- like, then shooting people in the face with a pistol strong enough to blast through a boulder.)
I will slap a 15+ rating on it just to be safe.
Score-9.0 out of 10 shrimp Spring Rolls.
